Introduction & Brief

In 2015, all Member States of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In the document are 17 shared Sustainable Development Goals to promote “peace and prosperity for the people and the planet.” The 17 goals are actionable steps countries around the world can work on together in a “global partnership.” The goals are diverse such as improving health and education, and protecting living creatures above and below the water. UNSDG recognizes they are all interconnected.

I created a short work entitled One by One, using motion and video to promote and support one of the Sustainable Development Goals. I am passionate about women’s rights and reproductive rights so I chose to focus on Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. I used a collage method with pre-existing archives, historical photographs, and sounds to create a powerful message.

Note

In light of the recent Dobbs Decision by the Supreme Court repealing Roe v Wade, the tactics of anti-choice activists in using incremental changes to create societal upheaval is in stunning display. I fear more human rights such as contraception, and marriage equality are the next targets for similar destruction. When I created this project, I couldn’t have fully appreciated the gravity of its theme.
